Day 59 {cinnamon buns}

Sunday, 28 February 2010

Today was a pretty quiet day around our house. I made the most incredible cinnamon buns today. They were amazing. Thanks Andrea for recommending the recipe!

Nana came over and played with the kids in the snow. The boys hate playing in the snow, however it became far more exciting when they discovered the road. This was also about the time that the kids were brought inside (Owen's in red, Ethan's in blue). ;)

The Olympics wrapped tonight and it was awesome. Something bizarre has happened. Suddenly I am watching curling and hockey and am right into it. Thank god the Olympics are coming to an end because it's just unnatural. Anyway, as much as I was into it, I couldn't take the pressure of the gold medal game between Canada and the USA. I decided to go for a nap and woke up in time to see the nail biter end to it and see Canada win in overtime. It was amazing.

In the evening I watched much of the closing ceremonies and watched two amazing weeks of patriotism come to an end. It's too bad my grandparents weren't able to see it as they would have loved it. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated to Canada in the 50s and were very proud to say they were Canadian. So am I. I have never been prouder in my life to be Canadian. Big thanks to Jane for sending this link to me. I remember seeing this air after the hockey game and it's amazing. I couldn't think of a better way to summarize the past two weeks. They have been incredible.

Day 58 {recovered}

Saturday, 27 February 2010

Although still very pale, Ava is finally totally over the Norwalk virus thank goodness. As a result, it was a day full of tea parties and a few treats to make up for the week she lost. Unfortunately the boys may have been a little too excited to have her back to normal and one of them (Owen I am sure) scratched her.

In unrelated news, the Canadian men won a pile of medals yesterday in Vancouver. Go Canada go!!!! The Olympics have been on non-stop in our house for two weeks and I am going through withdrawal at the thought of them coming to an end.

Day 57 {craft time}

Friday, 26 February 2010

Today was a good day. Ava woke up and the first words out of her mouth were "Can I do a craft?". First order of business was making a picture for her cousin Natalia. She was the first person she thought of and spelled her name all by herself. Thank goodness she is finally back to normal. It's kind of nice to see her back to making messes. The house was almost too clean there for a bit.

In unrelated news, the kids had a bit of a dance party last night when Nana was over and as a result, everybody has a new favourite music video.

Ava's favourite video (the "girl throws her keys in the toilet" song):

Owen's favourite video:

and Ethan's favourite video:

Somebody has a crush on Taylor Swift. :)

Mommy's favourite video:

Not that we get to watch it without the kids screaming through the whole thing. Apparently the kids are not rock fans...yet.

Day 56 {medal count}

Thursday, 25 February 2010

Today was a better day around our house. Ava went to the doctor and we found out she actually had the Norwalk virus. Our doctor was able to give us some guidelines on what to feed her so she would stop getting sick.

I went back to work and the babysitter finally came back to our house after almost a week off. I have been enjoying seeing everybody get into the spirit of the Olympics as I have been pretty obsessed myself. Here was the medal count on the way to work. But....it hadn't been updated after "Wonderful Wednesday" the day before when the Canadian women won a pile of medals.

Much better.

In related news, I have become a huge fan of the CTV Olympics coverage. Not only do I like the fact that they have pulled Brian Williams out of storage again (seriously - why do we only see this guy for two weeks every two years? He rocks.), but Jay Onrait has had me laughing my head off all week during the morning coverage. This guy kills me:

Day 55 {norwalk}

Wednesday, 24 February 2010

The boys have bounced back from the flu, but Ava continues to get sick after meals. It's not as bad as it was over the weekend, but she still looks pale and is getting sick right after she eats. We would later find out on Thursday that she actually had the Norwalk virus.

That certainly explains why she was as rough as she was and why it held on for so long. My kids don't sit still for more than two minutes, so when they sleep the day away something is definitely not right.

Every morning when she wakes up she tells me she is better and asks if she can go to grandma's house to see her cousins that she didn't get to see on Saturday because she was sick. Then she gets sick and is devastated. Today it made her feel a little bit better to do her own hair and wear a pretty hairband with a bow on it. Later in the afternoon she passed out on the floor with her hairband on the floor not far from where she was laying.

It's been rough for poor Ava. Hopefully she gets better soon. Thanks for looking!

Day 54 {down and out}

Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Another pajama day for the kids today. Owen & Ava were rough and Ethan's mission was to drive them crazy by any means necessary.

Here's Owen between naps, pale and sporting several nicks and scratches inflicted by Ethan at some point or another.

Here are the boys after their bath, gearing up to watch a few minutes of the Team Canada mens' hockey game. Not the greatest picture, but I thought they looked cute (Owen is on the left and Ethan is on the right).

Something I really enjoyed was the ice dancing last night. It was amazing! Virtue and Moir are adorable and I don't know if it's just me or not, but Moir has this whole Patrick Dempsey/Can't Buy Me Love thing going on. :)

Day 53 {stomach flu day 4,358}

Monday, 22 February 2010

Three more casualties last night. Pat, Dusty and Squeeze were caught in the line of fire. Here they are after a night in the sink.

Owen is a mess, Ava is getting there and Ethan is now recovered and is dedicating every waking hour to harassing everyone. Unfortunately we aren't out of the woods yet.

Day 52 {birthday}

Sunday, 21 February 2010

The stomach flu rolls on in the McDougall household. Ava continues to be rough, Ethan is slowly starting to recover and Owen is starting to get worse. One of the few things that keeps them all happy is watching Dora. Here's Owen watching Dora with his favourite blanket and his stuffed toy snake.

Did I mention that I found a great new chocolate chip cookie recipe this week? It made 7 dozen cookies and since the kids are barely eating and we are barely cooking, they are serving as a great meal replacement.

Tomorrow is my older sister's birthday, so I made her favourite dessert for the occasion. Here is one of the saddest Mille Feuilles desserts ever made. I was folding laundry and running around while making it and the result was terrible looking. But...it tasted pretty good in the end and it looked FANTASTIC once the candles were in.

Don't you feel younger knowing that you aren't going to be 32 until next year? You're welcome. ;) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! xo

Day 51 {stomach flu}

Saturday, 20 February 2010

It's been a hell of a weekend. One by one, each of the kids have come down with the stomach flu. Ethan started with it Wednesday and Ava & Owen started Friday night. I haven't seen my kids this sick in a long time.

I'm tired and don't have a whole lot to say except I hope they get better soon. :(

Day 50 {raggamuffin}

Friday, 19 February 2010

In our house it is rare for us to A. not bath the kids all at the same time and B. not have a basket full of folded laundry lying around. Last night I bathed Ava separately after the boys were in bed and being organized for once, had packed all of the laundry away, leaving nothing for Ava to wear to bed. As you can see from this picture, I had to improvise.

Day 49 {gpoyt}

Thursday, 18 February 2010

According to Photojojo, Wednesday is the day to take gratuitous pictures of yourself. While I can't see myself doing this every day, some guy actually took a picture of himself every day for six years. Check it out - it's fascinating. Unfortunately I didn't get around to it yesterday, so I give you Gratuitous Picture of Yourself Thursday:

Ava thought it was hilarious. Me, not so much upon review. Duuuuuuude: 1. You have crow's feet. 2. Tweeze your eyebrows already. You look like a sasquatch. On the bright side, you got a hair cut. Nice work.

In other news, a certain almost four year old decided that she wanted to make Owen look "fancy" and dressed him up in her clothes. Being a good sport, he went along with it willingly:

During nap time, Ava wanted to take some pictures with my camera. Here is some of her work.

Helium Balloon by Ava M:

Militant Barbie in Plastic Peek-a-boo Frock by Ava M:

Lonely Sock by Ava M:

Here's Ava at the end of the day. Maxing and relaxing in our bed at the crack of nine o'clock reading her Jillian Jiggs book.

Day 48 {lunchtime revolt}

Wednesday, 17 February 2010

Today was a bit hit and miss. The kids went relatively easy on me, but Ethan started with the stomach flu which made the second half of the day kind of miserable. One thing is for sure - Owen does not like leftovers:

Here's Ava with Scarlett. We've been worried about Scarlett lately. Either she has hurt her hip or she is starting to have hip problems due to her weight and age. Whatever the case, she's been reluctant to climb the stairs and has been yelping when she moves a certain way. As a result, she's been getting a lot more attention than usual.

Unfortunately, not all of the attention comes in a gentle form like above (Owen's performing the headlock as Ethan hits her with a stuffed animal snake).

Day 47 {pancake tuesday}

Tuesday, 16 February 2010

Pancake Tuesday has definitely changed now that my grandmother is gone. While Aunt Jemima made an appearance occasionally over the years, we always had her homemade Portuguese pancakes to look forward to . I made them last year and planned to make them again this year but as you will see, plans for this coming weekend changed and definitely not for the better.

Day 46 {family day}

Monday, 15 February 2010

Today was Family Day. My company allows us to take Family Day on the actual day or save it and use it in the week between Christmas and New Years. I chose to work as I am back to my three day a week schedule and find it hard enough getting my work done in three days let alone two. It's also a great day to work because the roads are empty and I can get to work in no time.

It was a slow day and I left work early and came home in time to take the kids outside for a quick play in the snow before dinner. The first thing the boys did when they got outside? Check to see if the vehicles were unlocked. Remember - when the boys are 17 and jimmying our car doors open with coat hangers and stealing our vehicles - you saw it here first.

In unrelated news, we became a 2% only family today. The boys said goodbye to homogenized milk and we said goodbye to 1% and met in the middle. I decided to go old school and go the jug route. The verdict? A pain in the ass and actually more expensive. (It's now Saturday and we are back to 4L bags of milk.)

Day 45 {two times two}

Sunday, 14 February 2010

Today was not only Valentine's Day, but the boys' second birthday. It was a crazy morning, running around doing the final preparations for their birthday party in the afternoon.

My beautiful children bought me flowers for Valentine's Day that Ava picked out herself.

Following my friend Carrie's advice, I tried to make the party as individual as I could. The party had two themes and was like two parties in one. The living room was decorated with a Diego theme for Ethan and the dining room was decorated with a Sesame Street theme for Owen. My mom made two beautiful cakes matching the theme. Thanks, Mom!

I did some baking for the party. Remember these?

I made them again and they went over so well that come to think of it, I never did get to eat one. Oh well. I did get to try one of these

and they were pretty good.

Here are some random shots from the birthday party. Ethan is in red and Owen is in green. Here are the boys blowing out their candles. They both used the "blow through the gap in your teeth" technique to blow the candles out:

Ava's not the only one who hates "the birthday song". When everybody broke into "Happy Birthday to You" Owen started crying.

At that point we just opted for the Black Eyed Peas and played this on the stereo instead.

The boys' presents from Nana & Grandad - matching lawn tractors. They were a huge hit.
