day 181 - hst eve $

Wednesday, 30 June 2010

Tomorrow Canada launches the new "harmonized sales tax". Instead of paying two separate taxes (provincial sales tax which is 8% and a federal goods and services tax which is 5%) we will now pay one combined tax of 13%. Apparently we won't notice a difference on 83% of the things we buy, but the other 17% will be taxed at a higher rate.

One of the biggest things that is going to be affected is the price of gas. As of midnight the price of gas will go from being taxed at 5% to 13%. Because of that, the gas station was packed tonight when I went out to do some errands. 92.9 cents per litre is far from a deal, but it's better than the $1 it's going to cost tomorrow.

I have a phrase that sums up my feelings on this whole HST thing perfectly, but I'll shut my mouth as there are grandparents reading this.

day 180 - berry chapstick $

Tuesday, 29 June 2010

My kids are obsessed with chapstick. If they get their hands on it, you can kiss it goodbye. You know the story - they roll it up too far and then somebody gets carried away and snaps it off. Then the part they broke off disappears god knows where, never to be seen again.

This picture was taken as I was straightening my hair this morning. Ava found the chapstick first this morning and was more than happy to apply Owen's chapstick after she did her own. I'd say poor Owen, but he found it quite enjoyable. He didn't even complain when she moved on from his lips to coating the rest of his face. Anyway, it was pretty cute and I have to admit I loved the berry flavoured kisses I got before I left for work.

Here's another picture I took today. It's become a weekly tradition - every Tuesday after soccer, Ava races Nana back to our house. Jason has usually gone ahead of us with the boys, and I walk slowly back to the house, enjoying two whole minutes of silence.

day 179 - no boys allowed $

Monday, 28 June 2010

Ava and I ran errands on the weekend. While in the dollar store on Saturday, we found the perfect sign for her bedroom door. Ava was thrilled with it so we bought it.

Last night:

Ava: " ETHAN JAMES MCDOUGALL!!!! You are not 'upposed to be in here!!!"
(Every time she gave the boys trouble this weekend she called them by their full names. Wonder where she gets that from?)

Obviously it's not working so well. When we bought it, I didn't have the heart to tell her that her brothers can't read. What's even funnier is that the boys already got a hold of it and it has a bite mark in it.

On a totally unrelated note, I've been searching for new songs for the iPod. I started with the 70s and somehow managed to come across this gem from Saturday Night Live:

How did I not know about this? I've been laughing about this all day. It's right up there with Will Ferrell's Neil Diamond skits.

Do you have "Nights on Broadway" stuck in your head now? You're welcome.

day 178 - and the rain continues $

Sunday, 27 June 2010

Sitting on the porch and watching the rain is becoming the kids' favourite pastime. They haven't had much of a choice as we have gotten so much rain over the past two days that part of our backyard is sitting under puddles. Please god don't let the turd swamp return.

day 177 - it's raining, it's pouring $

Saturday, 26 June 2010

A really, really boring day. It's a good thing the wedding we did last week wasn't today as it was absolutely miserable outside. It rained all day and quite heavily at times.

Ava and I were bored, so we went out for a little drive in our Wonder Woman t-shirts. Hooray Old Navy and your collectibles line. Please note: a womens Goonies t-shirt, size small would be a great addition to the lineup. Thank you.

My dad told us a while ago that something was wrong with one of the gutters on the side of our house. The problem is that we never seem to be home when it's raining hard and if we are, we forget to look outside. Today Jason remembered and went out on the porch to look. As you can see, the kids were not in agreement that a leaking gutter is a bad thing.

This is my favourite picture for the day. There's just something about the blurry lines from the rain and the water droplets. Sometimes you just get lucky. :) Mind you I would have been luckier if the damn gas meter wasn't in the picture. Oh well.

Oh and the best part of this weekend? Congratulations on your engagement, Jarret & Sara!!!

day 176 - the end of the week $

Friday, 25 June 2010

I am not a gambler but last night I dreamed I won the lottery. $14 million to be exact. Oddly enough, today's Lotto Max is apparently huge. Something like one winner wins $50 million and 50 other winners win $1 million each. Foreshadowing? Possibly, so I made sure I bought a ticket this morning on the way to work.

Seriously though - $6 for a basic ticket with encore? Unbelievable.

The only other picture I took today - the kids waving to the babysitter as she left tonight. We are so lucky. She has the patience of a saint. The three of them drive me around the bend and she watches them as well as her two kids. I love it that the tip of Ava's little pony tail is visible. I didn't do that ponytail. When I left for work this morning, she had crazy bedhead going on. Vicki did Ava's ponytail today as she does every day she is at our house and it is greatly appreciated.

And that was about it. I closed out the day letting Ava stay up late so we could snuggle on the couch. We watched America's Got Talent that I taped earlier in the week. I can still hear her high pitched little laugh as we watched Fafo.

I know, I know. You threw up a bit in your mouth and may never sleep again. You're welcome.

day 175 - much music countdown $

Thursday, 24 June 2010

Today was pretty uneventful. Ava and I were off to the dentist in the morning. She got a fluoride treatment for the first time and handled it like a champion. I was very impressed because I always found that part of it torturous and was glad when I turned 12 or 16 or whatever it was and never had to do it again.

Mommy on the other hand had a front tooth evened out with the grinder and had her gums measured to make sure they aren't receding. Hooray for getting old. My teeth were so sore for the rest of the day. It makes me wonder what on earth they would feel like if I had summer teeth. Come to think of it, people who have summer teeth obviously don't go to the dentist, so I think I answered my own question.

As an aside, remember the Windows pipes screensaver? Good times, good times.

Not a whole lot happened other than that. My new plan of attack in dealing with the kids is to entertain them with music videos. LOTS of them. We've started watching countdowns on Much Music on a regular basis. Recent favourites include Hedley, Ke$ha and Katy Perry.

Here's Owen watching California Gurls. I have no idea what on earth cupcake bras and whip cream shooting jubblies have to do with the song but Ava finds it very entertaining. And I find it entertaining hearing my kids scream out "Snoop Dogg" when I ask them who the guy is in the video. Ahhh...good old Snoop.

The other way to keep them entertained? Load them into the van, go for a trip to the park and circle the town listening to music. Now I spent many a night circling this town and listening to loud music back in the day, but never once did I ever think I would be doing it in my thirties with a minivan full of children. Speaking of children, here are my four kids:

day 174 - monsters inc $

Wednesday, 23 June 2010

So apparently there was an earthquake here today. My mom felt it a couple of blocks away while she was at work, my dad felt it sitting in the Tim Hortons drive thru and I didn't feel a thing. I was sitting on my couch, folding laundry and quietly catching up on General Hospital while the boys were sleeping. Maybe our house is better built than I thought. Or maybe my body felt it and quickly disregarded it because it wasn't followed by a scream or crying. Whatever the case, I didn't notice a thing.

Today was a boring day filled with grocery shopping and spaghetti sauce making. God bless the library because watching a movie with the kids is the only way I can keep them from causing trouble. Tonight we watched Monsters Inc. which none of us had seen before. Ava only made it halfway through and then chickened out. The boys and I watched the whole thing and it was fantastic.

Yeah. A pretty boring day.

day 173 - timbit soccer $

Tuesday, 22 June 2010

Soccer night is always an exciting night for Ava. She has waited a very long six sleeps for it and is dying to see her friend L. It's also a night where the parents get a good laugh because it's very entertaining. Tonight did not disappoint. It was a total gong show.

Ava got to play goal. She was right into it

but I don't think goal-tending is in her future.

After that, one of the girls on her team had a rest in the net

then she did somersaults across the field. Ava and L took a break from "ring around the coach" to take a little stroll while a random yellow team member was injured and a random blue team member from the other game took a rest. The game rolled on and my dad laughed so hard he almost fell out of his lawn chair.

Then we ended up at Tim Horton's AGAIN. Damn you Tim Horton's and your in-your-face logo trotting by me on the field everywhere I look.

The most exciting thing that happened today? One of my children actually LEARNED something from me! Ava wanted to take this picture of all of her dolls lined up for my blog. I got my camera for her and as she composed her shot she noticed her shadow being cast across the dolls. She moved to the side until it wasn't anymore and said she needed more sunshine. Colour me very impressed.

day 172 - new teapot $

Monday, 21 June 2010

I am a clutz. I always have been and it was even worse when I was pregnant. Every time I go out for a walk I take the same route and every single time I trip in the same spot right in front of the funeral home where the sidewalk is uneven.

About a month ago I broke my spoon rest in half and I smashed the handle off my teapot. I've been pouring my tea pot with pot holders ever since as I haven't had time to go out and find a new one.

Today my mom bought me a new one and I love it. Thanks, Mom. :)

Other than that, lots of stuff happened. The boys fed the dog three times the food she usually gets then then ate some of it themselves. Most kids would spit it out immediately. Mine chose to chew it up until it got nice and mushy and spit it all over my clean floor. I caught them as they went back for seconds.

A nice cup of tea out of my teapot would have been really nice tonight if I were able to keep my eyes open. Maybe tomorrow.

238 sleeps until the end of the terrible twos.

day 171 - father's day $

Sunday, 20 June 2010

Have you ever walked down the card aisle and found the perfect card? I did yesterday. Check the Father's Day card we got for Jason's dad:

Did I mention that the boys are exactly like Jason was as a toddler? In the spirit of what goes around comes around, it's safe to assume that both of my boys will eventually have triplets. Lots of wishing from me is only going to compound those chances.

Here is a picture of the kids with daddy:

It was a busy day today with a couple of places we had to go. First was Grandma & Grandpa's house where Ava got to see baby birds in one of the birdhouses (thanks to Jason R and Lucas for getting them to open their mouths to make a much more interesting picture)

and Owen and Ethan got to try pop for the first time. Both boys made some faces, with Ethan settling on yuck (definitely more of me in him) and Owen repeatedly going back for more (takes after his dad). I don't let the kids have pop so this was definitely a treat for them. This is Owen.

Then we were off to my parents' house.

Anybody who knows my dad knows he is a Nascar fan. Then if you really know him, you know his immense dislike for Dale Earnhardt (#3 - the deceased one) and that he cheers for Jeff Gordon (#24). And then if you know me, you know that it is my life's mission to buy him all of the Dale Earnhardt merchandise I can find. Christmas ornaments, salt and pepper shakers, calendars, you name it.

So as a very special gift from me, he had his very own Dale Earnhardt cupcake while the rest of us had Jeff Gordon ones. Yes they are totally bush league (no pun intended) and Cake Wreck caliber, but I've never claimed to be a cake decorator.

Anyway, from there the afternoon went to hell in a hand basket. No naps = all hell breaking loose. Did you know that Woody's makes a 99 calorie cooler? I think I burned 100 calories each time I chased one of the boys through the yard and brought them back after they ran toward the street. So in theory I should have been able to drink an entire case of them without gaining a pound (forgetting the fact that it would only take three of these to knock me on my ass). The problem was I didn't even get to finish one because the boys wouldn't knock it off.

After two dinners were thrown on the grass (both being Ethan's) and both Jason and I running after them one too many times, the boys were taken home.

I stayed behind for to do some yearly Father's Day pictures. There's a nice one of my dad and I but I have big dark circles under my eyes and I look kind of haggard looking. As a result, this is one of the nicest ones of me. Kinda gives you an idea of how bad that other one must be, doesn't it? ;)

day 170 - chris & dana $

Saturday, 19 June 2010

Today my best friend's brother got married and it was an absolutely beautiful day.

I'm guessing I have done about twenty weddings over the past 7 years. They can be fun, but it's a long day and it can be stressful. I've seen a lot of interesting things and in the case of one wedding, downright crazy things. But the wedding that dad and I did today was one of the nicest I have ever been to and I was lucky enough to be invited as not only a photographer, but also as a guest.

There were so many opportunities for great pictures and the bride was so relaxed and well organized that we even had some time to have some fun.

My tip for the day? Listen to the wedding party. I was taking a picture of one of the bridesmaids putting her earrings on in the mirror and I was laughing because I was getting the reflection of one of Chris' deer heads hanging on the wall in the other room. One of the bride's sisters suggested we do "antler shots".

Maybe I'm biased as I am on a first name basis with this deer after borrowing him for a work photoshoot (he didn't fit so well and ended up staring out the back window of my truck the whole way there and back), but I think this one is hilarious.

Congratulations Chris & Dana!
