day 334 - the line of the day $

Tuesday, 30 November 2010

The line of the day came at snack time today while the kids were eating Teddy Grahams:

Ava: "Here you go Owen. I ate the hands and the feet and the head. I left the bum for you because I don't like to eat bums."

day 333 - practice makes perfect $

Monday, 29 November 2010

Ava has been able to write her alphabet for so long I can't remember (it's been at least a year). For as much as we worked with her on her writing, we never worked much on written numbers. She could easily count to 30 or higher but had never written it out.

Now, two months into school she has been learning things in leaps and bounds. Every piece of artwork she brings home has "by Ava" written on it and I was amazed when she wrote out her numbers from one to thirty and showed it to me tonight.

I had my observation in her class this week and it was very interesting. I was so proud of her and it was interesting talking to the teacher. The all day, every day kindergarten has been a big issue this year, but by my estimation as well as Ava's teacher it is going fantastic. The kids are doing great and learning incredibly fast being in school every day.

day 332 - the stomach flu $

Sunday, 28 November 2010

The stomach flu rolled on in our house today. It was an all day pajama party for the kids and filled with lots of dirty laundry.

My boys amaze me. They can be down the flu and still cause a huge amount of trouble. The tree went up yesterday and already they have broken two of my ornaments. Somebody also drew on the wall in the laundry room with a purple face painting crayon. Not sure who broke the ornaments as I wasn't home at the time, but the wall drawing incident was the child below. Public enemy number one: Ethan.

Mid-morning he was quiet. I went to find him lying with Scarlett on her dog bed, quietly petting her. Any other time he would be quiet this week would be BAD NEWS.

day 331 - getting ready for christmas $

Saturday, 27 November 2010

Today was Christmas related from start to finish. We woke up to snow blanketing the ground. The boys had thrown the chain for the dog halfway across the deck so I had to trudge out in my running shoes and pjs to go and find it.

An hour later the Christmas music was playing and I was chasing the boys through the house with Johnny Mathis playing in the background. They each had a broom with one of my shoes on the end of it and would end up throwing them out into the snow before I could catch them.

From there the day didn't slow down. The boys and I decorated for Christmas and

I made eight dozen cookies for tomorrow's cookie exchange.

From there the day went downhill. Ava fell victim to the stomach flu upon her return from a birthday party for one of her classmates. She was unable to go to the event she has been counting down to for the past week - the Santa Claus Parade. Ethan and Owen were feeling well so they got to go.

And then we had another man down. Poor Owen got sick at the parade and only Ethan was able to go to the fire hall to see Santa. Thankfully he didn't realize that Santa looked awfully familiar (my dad).

I type this several days after the fact. This is the look of a child who will spend the rest of this week extensively testing the whole "he knows if you've been bad or good so be good for goodness sake" theory.

Several hours after this moment, Ethan came down with the stomach flu too.

So it was a busy day. A day I am glad is over. I took lots of pictures, but this is my favourite. Almost eight years ago a crazy little puppy came home from the breeder. She had our undivided attention for four full years before kids entered into the mix. She went from first in line to fourth with no hard feelings whatsoever.

When the kids are sick she is right there. She is in their rooms checking on them and when the day has come to an end she lies in the hallway between their rooms to keep an eye on them.

Tonight three sick little kids went to bed and one loyal dog kept watch.

day 330 - girls' day out $

Friday, 26 November 2010

Today was a wonderful day and I needed it. It was a PD day for Ava and I decided that rather than stay home, I would take the day off and we would go Christmas shopping together. It was really nice to have some time with just her and I.

Essentials for a mother/daughter shopping trip?

Girl power,

two hamburgers, hold the pickles

and most importantly, matching boots.

Today also marked Vicki's last day at our house. There are few people in this world who are brave enough to watch all three of our children at the same time. Vicki was one of them and she did it three (and sometimes four or five) days a week without complaint. She has the patience of a saint and we are going to miss her terribly.

The oddest thing happened tonight. I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner and was playing music to keep me motivated. The kids were dancing around and a milestone actually took place. I heard both of my boys singing along with the lyrics for the first time. The song they sang to? "I Like It" by Enrique Iglesias.

The next thing that happened was absolutely hilarious and one of those moments where I try so hard not to laugh while I discipline with absolutely no luck. He was beating up Ethan so I walked up to him and told him to stop. He very calmly looked up at me, did what appeared to be a Jersey Shore fist pump and ran away.

Now I don't watch Jersey Shore, but we do watch a lot of Much Music countdowns in this house. Somebody's apparently been watching a little too much of this:

day 329 - the mail $

Thursday, 25 November 2010

Every day I ask Ava what she did at school and she tells me "nothing". With the exception of the day she was the star student (she told me about that), almost all of the information I have gotten to this point has been through other people. The day she won the award for the silliest costume the girl who walks her home from school told me. The days she has assemblies I hear about them from my sister or another parent. Then last week it was my dad who told me that he saw Ava's class at the post office and that she had written and mailed a letter to herself while she was there.

The letter arrived today and she was quite impressed.

day 328 - thankful for good friends $

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

This morning a good friend stopped by work for a visit, tea in hand. It's amazing that years later she still remembers how I take my tea.

Thank you Sara. I needed this morning. It was a reminder of the good times. A lot of things have changed and six years have passed but this morning we were able to sit and laugh the way we used to. You are missed terribly.

And I absolutely LOVE your boots. xo

day 327 - bad day $

Tuesday, 23 November 2010

Today was a horrible day from the second I woke up and I am glad it is over. Thank you to the people who got me through it. To the average person I was my normal self. To others I was anything but and having a really rough day. Thank you for knowing when to leave me alone and thank you for knowing when I needed a hug. I love you guys.

Today's picture is unrelated. It's a picture of the gift cards I had to pick up for a Christmas party that is coming up.

day 326 - the chicken dance $

Monday, 22 November 2010

Tonight was birthday night at skating. Everyone got a party hat and they celebrated everybody's birthday by skating to the chicken dance and other party tunes. It was amazing to watch (when I wasn't chasing kids through the stands and down the hallway past the change rooms).

In two short months, Ava has gone from not letting go of the teachers to being able to shuffle across centre ice to shuffling backwards across the ice. Tonight was night one of backward skating and she did fantastic. I am so proud.

Now that I think about it, it probably was kind of funny that I was chasing the boys to the chicken dance. I think I dislike that song even more now that I think about it.

day 325 - the craft sale $

Sunday, 21 November 2010

I'm not a big craft sale person as it's not really my speed. Crocheted slippers and tea towels are not my style, but I like the Lions craft sale because in addition to that stuff they have things that are my speed: beautiful cards I didn't have to make, funky necklaces and nice candles.

Sure I say I am going under the guise of "Christmas shopping" but who are we kidding? I buy stuff for myself.

day 324 - christmas pictures $

Saturday, 20 November 2010

Now listen up kids. Both of your grandmothers have requested new pictures of you guys for Christmas.

It's time to put on your brand new Christmas outfits and get your smiles ready.

No amount of arguing is going to get you out of this.

I want nice smiles and no "cheese".

Not an ideal pose but I'm flexible. We can do a couple of these. Not too many or your face will stay like that.

Rule #1. I'm the art director on this shoot. Opinions will be heard but not necessarily followed.

Please be on your best behaviour and maybe we'll get something we can work with.

And if we're really lucky, we might even come up with my favourite. picture. ever.

(Owen left, Ethan right)
