Day 151 {a day out}

Sunday, 31 May 2009

Today was a fantastic day. My mom, dad and I took Ava to Oakville to visit my sister and brother-in-law. Ava was so excited as she finds the whole process fascinating - buzzing up to their condo, the magic door that lets us in, riding the alligator (elevator), the balcony, everything.

Here we are after we picked up Nana and Grandad. I am going to be very disappointed when Ava starts wearing her sunglasses properly.

A ritual. Every time we go to M's place we park in visitor parking and Ava has to step on every letter between the van and the end of the parking spaces.

When I saw this picture I took I laughed my head off.

Tell me you don't have this in your head now:

Anyway, after some retail therapy, Auntie M and Uncle Craig took Ava over to the pond across the street from their building to feed the geese and ducks.

It was really cold today but the sun was shining and the sky was a beautiful blue. The moon was even out.

Ava even got a new purse.

On our way back to the van. Hey look - my shadow, although kind of unflattering in this picture, is skinnier. SWEET. You are looking at a size 7 shadow baby. :)

As usual, there was a shiny reflective object calling to me. This was at the top of the ramp that goes down to the parking garage.

Ava wanted to know where M's car was so M was explaining about the parking garage.

And that was it. It was a great day! It was ended by Ava saying one of the funniest things she has ever said when we got home but I won't post it as I can see everybody right now rolling their eyes and blaming me for what she said and where she got it from. Yes she got it from me and it is one of the funniest things I have ever heard her say.

Thanks for a great time Mel and Craig! Thanks for looking everyone.

Day 150 {beer bread}

Saturday, 30 May 2009

After a few days of pulling up my pants non-stop, I had my dad add some holes to my belt. Did you know you can punch holes in leather with a crop-a-dile? Me neither. The distance between the notch I used to use and the new one I am using now? 2.75 inches. Unbelievable. I may have to celebrate by buying myself some new, smaller jeans.

Ava went to my mom and dad's house for a visit where they made some homemade binoculars.

Ava's favourite thing in my parents backyard - the statue in the corner.

Ava picking dandelions for "the lady".

Ava and I made beer bread to go with dinner. This is the easiest bread you will ever make. It doesn't need time to rise, you don't need to use any yeast and it is delicious smothered with butter straight out of the oven (which I did not do. Well a little bit. But nothing crazy.). It's called Labatt Lager Loaf but since I don't think I have ever seen a case of Labatt anything come into this house, we used Bud Light instead.

No day would be complete without the boys doing something crazy. Ava has been showing her brothers how to do things and giving them far too many ideas. Guess who put the tractor on the toy box? (That's Owen in green and Ethan in blue.)

Here is the recipe for the bread if you want to try it out:

Labatt's Lager Loaf

2-3/4 cups all purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dry mustard
1 cup shredded old cheddar cheese
1 bottle Labatt's Blue beer (uncap and allow to come to room temperature)
* I've used Bud Light, Molson Canadian, etc. and it always tastes exactly the same

Topping: 1/4 cup shredded old cheddar cheese

Spoon flour into a dry measuring cup. Level off and pour into a bowl. Add baking powder, sugar, salt and dry mustard and stir well to combine. Add cheese and toss evenly to distribute. Pour in Labatt's blue beer and stir just to combine.

Spread in a greased 8" x 4" loaf pan. Sprinkle top with remaining cheese. Bake at 350 F for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool a few minutes before turning onto a wire rack. Serve warm. (I also like to toast it - it's delicious.)

Day 149 {barbecue}

Friday, 29 May 2009

Today was a fantastic day. We held our annual barbecue at work to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I spent the day in the sun and am sporting a ridiculous sunburn tonight. Tomorrow I will have to take a picture of my bright red arms against my pasty white legs.

Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures but I don't want to post any closeups of anybody without their permission, so here are a couple of boring ones.

The lineup to get in:

Everybody hanging out, drinking beer and listening to the live band:

And the best part of the day, although I didn't get one, was the sno cones:

How cool is that? I went to work, was outside almost all day, got a suntan/burn, could have had a sno cone, got to listen to a live band, won a raffle prize (brunch for two at the new Delta) and I GOT PAID FOR IT. Now you know why I like going to work so much. :)

The best part of the entire day? It sounds like we raised $3,500 for JDRF. Sweet.

Thanks for looking! I'm off to watch Jay Leno's last show. :(

Day 148 {busy day}

Thursday, 28 May 2009

I didn't take many pictures today. It was a busy day and our schedule was all off. The kids were all up at 7 sharp and Owen was crusty and back in bed by 10. I took Ethan to the doctor, did some groceries, did some laundry and made some spaghetti sauce and lasagnas.

Ava's Aunt Karen & Uncle Jack came for a visit and took her out for lunch. Lucky Ava got a new activity book (thank you so much!).

And that was about it. Nothing too exciting happened but I am tired. The naps didn't line up today and the boys keep waking up making me think this could be a very long night. Anyway, thanks for looking!

Day 147 {rearranging furniture}

Wednesday, 27 May 2009

Sick and tired of pulling the kids off of the couch and away from the blinds, I rearranged the furniture and pulled the couch away from the window thinking they would stop climbing. Did it work?

You tell me.

That was my day. Pulling kids off of stuff and pulling my hair out. It wasn't a very good day, but it immediately got better when I saw this:

** If you haven't read the Twilight books or don't want to be spoiled about the New Moon movie coming out, stop reading here. **

Check this out. Here's the scene (if you've read the books, you all know which one I mean) that was filmed today in Italy for New Moon.

(Click on the pictures to see more shots from the set. More pictures can be found here and here.)

Sweet Jeebus. How awesome is that?! Anybody want to babysit my kids in November so I can go see the movie when it comes out? If you read this blog regularly I am guessing the answer is probably no.

Thanks for looking!

This week I am assigned to two designers over at {we are} storytellers. Here is my first layout of the week using products by Angela Woo Designs. I love her stuff. And of course my layouts would not be complete without one of Chrissy W's fabulous templates. :)

Day 146 {evening routine}

I didn't take many pictures today either as it was another work day. Here was our routine tonight. Dinner was over, baths were done and Ava was sitting down watching Cinderella. Ethan is up on the couch about to scale the back and Owen is trying to pull the laptop off the kitchen table (which I was using to get the dirt on Jon & Kate) and I have to think quick and stop them both.

Not exciting, but it's our nightly routine and it's all I have for today.

Day 145 {bedtime}

Monday, 25 May 2009

I didn't take many pictures today. Five actually. Two of Ethan crying before dinner. Boring. One of Owen eating his dinner. Boring. And then I got two of Ava playing after her bath. I had just blow dried her hair and she decided she needed to accessorize her pajamas with a hair band and sunglasses.

And that was it. It was a work day, so those are always difficult for me picture wise. Thanks for looking!

Day 144 {out for a walk}

Sunday, 24 May 2009

Today was a beautiful day. I tried to teach Ava to play t-ball. That was short-lived. She hit once and I hit once and it was over. It looks like she is going to be a righty when it comes to batting, but we didn't really play long enough to be sure.

The kids and I went for a walk with my mom. Ava picked wild flowers she found along the way. Here are some pictures from our walk.

Here is a classic example of why our dinette chairs are always hidden in the kitchen. In the picture below, the boys have just flipped the chair and Ethan is pulling Owen around on it.

That was it. No weight loss today. I've been sticking with the walking and have really grown to like it. Scarlett's been dragging a bit on the walks though and has been walking several steps behind me. I don't have any knowledge of physics but my guess is that now that my thighs aren't rubbing together anymore, the lack of friction is speeding me up. Either that or Scarlett's starting to slow down a little bit.

Anyway, it was another long day but a good one. Thanks for looking!

Day 143 {garage sale}

Today was great. I started off the day down another three pounds. I am really starting to wonder if our scale is broken as I only have two more to go. Anyway, we had a garage sale at my mom & dad's house. The boys were a handful and we did a lot of running, but there were brief moments where they stood still. Here's Ethan leaning against the neighbour's garage door. He's drinking his bottle, watching the goings on and trying to decide which way to run next.

We didn't take a lot to sell, but what we took provided hours of entertainment. One of the bins I took over was full of Halloween costumes. Ava was thrilled and played for the rest of the day. She's also the reason why I suddenly had a "do not sell" pile.

Ava and my sister.

Thanks Mel for taking this picture:

Poor Owen. Ava always makes him be the girl.

My mom playing with Ava and Owen.

You know me and shiny stuff.

Ava and my sister.

In the bin there were a bunch of capes. Here are my mom, my sister and Ava playing superheroes.

Here's my grandfather's old chair waiting to be picked up. This chair has been around for as long as I can remember. He always sat in it. Unfortunately my last memories of him sitting in it are not good ones as he was in the final stages of cancer, but there are lots of good memories too. My grandmother doesn't have room for it anymore, so it's nice to see that somebody else can now enjoy it.

Check this out - I got to put my feet up for more than two seconds. Actually that's not true. Right around now some guy picked my camera up off the table thinking it was for sale. Keep walking, pal.

Here's one of my favourite pictures from today. My sister took it. Thanks, Mel!

That was it. It was a really fun day. Thanks for looking!
