day 14 - money for nothing

I listen to a lot of music. I don't spend one moment in the car without it. I play it at my desk at work. I listen to it on my iPod and I listen to it on the radio. I sing along to everything and I don't give it much thought.

While the music I listen to can often say a lot about me, it doesn't define me. And that's why I was shocked when I heard on the radio today that the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council banned "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits this week. All it took was one complaint, and a song that's 25 years old has been yanked from the airwaves.

I don't get it. Yes the word it was banned for is offensive and it sure isn't in my vocabulary but the song isn't malicious or mean and it isn't delivered in that fashion.

I'm not a Dire Straits fan but this still bothers me because I don't like to be censored. My parents didn't censor what I listened to as a kid and I don't censor what my kids listen to. Don't rewrite the classics and don't colourize my black and white movies. But I am open to putting asterisks beside the names of home run hitting champs who are juice monkeys. That's cool.

The other thing I found even more puzzling? Twice this week I heard the same radio station drop two words that were really offensive without a beat. Both times they were in reference to a particular person and meant in a derogatory way. But that was okay? I don't get it.

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box. This was just my topic du jour.

Cool photo. I don't understand why they censor some stuff and not other stuff.
