A couple of months ago I started to think about getting an iPad. I put a lot of thought into the purchase and decided to wait for the new iPad since the release was not far off.
My New iPad (call it what you want - it's the iPad 3 as far as I am concerned) arrived this morning. I have to give Apple a lot of credit - there are people who waited in line for hours today and mine was delivered straight to my door and it arrived before lunch.
It's been a couple of weeks and I have to say I am really enjoying it. It's nice to have a good size screen that doesn't have a hot fan under it burning your legs like my laptop does. It's got me back into an old hobby and changed the way I do a few things.
Here are a few of the apps I've been using:
Ancestry - It's been over 10 years since I last worked on my family tree. Much has changed. More British censuses have come online and family tree researching has been revolutionized. The Ancestry app helps you out by giving you hints that help you find your relatives. For example, you're looking for Thomas Frederick Rawlins? Here he is on the 1891 and 1901 censuses with his family and here are his birth and death certificate details. It's brilliant and worth every cent if you're into that kind of thing.
Kindle (Kobo also has one) - This free app turns your iPad into an e-reader. I've always claimed to be old school, but having just read the first two Hunger Games on my iPad, I gotta say there is something nice about reading like this. It's nice knowing what percentage of the book I've completed and having the book pop up right where I left off.
Draw Something - I always thought I was a good drawer. Apparently I was wrong, but if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? I'll be sure to show you some of my masterpieces sometime. Wait until you see my interpretations of Eminem, Luke Skywalker and the word balcony. It's beyond me how the person on the other end didn't get them.
Flipboard - Another free app, Flipboard takes your Facebook feed, Twitter feed and a checklist of some of your interests and turns the whole thing into an e-book. I haven't spent much time with it, but it's interesting and it's an app I need to spend more time with.
Momento - I know I already told you about this app but I LOVE it. I like having one central spot to keep all of my random thoughts during the day. I can link screen caps and photos to my diary posts and Momento pulls all of my feeds into one spot. It keeps me organized and helps me remember goings on for my blogging when I fall behind. The only drawback is it doesn't support iCloud so it can't be synced with another device. I highly recommend it.
Speaking of iCloud. Best. invention. ever. Setup took five minutes and I was off to the races.
