day 168 - i have big belly buttons and i cannot lie

Sunday, 29 July 2012

The other day, I was in the kitchen folding laundry and Owen came up to me. He put his hands on my shirt at chest level and said "you have big belly buttons".

Be thankful you're a boy, Owen. Big belly buttons are hereditary.

day167

Something he definitely inherited from his mother? Twisting his hair.

day 167 - garbasaurus hunting

Saturday, 28 July 2012

What I love about geocaching is all of the cool places it's taken us.

Sure I could spend $300 and take the kids to Canada's Wonderland for the day, but why do that when we can root around in Garbasaurus's armpit for free on a summer evening?

Truth be told, this photo wasn't taken today but it's a lot more interesting than the boring, story-less shot I did take.

fabulous friday challenge

Thursday, 26 July 2012

Welcome to another fabulous week! I haven't taken many pictures this week due to a bad cold (why do colds always strike during vacation?!). Thankfully I am getting over it and plan to make up for it on the weekend with several creative projects planned.

This week's shot is actually from a couple of weeks ago. It was taken at African Lion Safari. The last time we went, Owen was four months old and fast asleep in his infant carrier. You can't take carriers or strollers on the bus so we had to drive through the reserve in our own vehicle, through the monkey area where the little buggars almost ripped off our rear wiper. Now here he is four years later sitting and watching while other people get their cars destroyed (suckers).

day 166 - the quiet serenity of the cenotaph

Tuesday, 24 July 2012

There's nothing more peaceful than sitting at the cenotaph downtown on a summer evening. Eating an ice cream and watching the traffic go by it can be quite peaceful. We even ran into Ava's friend Jocelyn.

But nothing shatters the quiet serenity of the evening summer air quite like "MOM! Owen's peeing on the back of that wall!"

day166

So far this week has been all about urination and flatulence.

Such is the glamorous life of a mother of three children six and under.

day 165 - hide the fart

Tonight was a night of questions:

Would you like your hair curly or straight when I style it?

day163_2

And who in the hell ordered add on packs for an app called "Hide the Fart" on my iPad?!

day 164 - the world is your urinal

Monday, 23 July 2012

Yet another soccer night and day two of my diet. My shadow sure as hell isn't shrinking yet.

Here's a shot of dad and I watching Ava's big save and throwing of the ball down the field.

day162

And in a moment of sheer brilliance, my son Ethan discovers that rather than run all the way home he can run over the hill at the side of the soccer field to relieve himself. It would have worked perfectly had he not stood on the top of the hill, pulled his pants down and faced everyone as he peed.

day 162 - don't mind the dirt

Sunday, 22 July 2012

I came downstairs to a wonderful surprise this morning. My children made me breakfast for the first time ever. It was a very thoughtful breakfast of Fruit Loops and unwashed strawberries.

It was delicious right down to the little dirt chaser that I washed down with the remaining milk.

day 161 - adventures at the damascus emporium

I was in need of some photography props for my upcoming newborn shoot, so Maggie and I went hunting with the kids to local antique dealers in the area.

It's hard to sum up the ambiance that is the Damascus Emporium. It's definitely an interesting spot. I don't think I've ever been to an antique dealer who leaves their treasures outside to brave the wind, rain and harsh Canadian winter, but there were some interesting things to be found.

The Damascus Emporium: because every girl should have a purse and matching He-Man power sword.

day 160 - i don't give a number two

Today was a miserable day. I know two things:

1. Pitbull's new song is catchy, and;

2. I feel really bad for that poor woman who raced to get her kids out the door to get to work for an important meeting and got pulled over by the police for using her cell phone.

I'll bet she had a horrible day too.

day 159 - lacrosse night

Another night of lacrosse. Another scrimmage game where two boys who are on the same team try to steal the ball from each other by knocking it out of each other's stick.

Thank god they wear helmets.

day 158 - david vs. goliath

This is a terrible picture but it goes with my story. Today as I left work it was absolutely pouring. I exited the back doors of the building and laughed to myself as I watched a lady beside me put a garbage bag over her body like she was boarding the Maid of the Mist.

Feeling very prepared and infinitely cooler, I opened my dollar store umbrella and proceeded to walk to my car.

Ever seen a dollar store umbrella perform against a wall of wind and rain? The damn thing folded like a deck of cards.

Touché karma.

day 157 - jk parent information night

Today was junior kindergarten parent information night. This is the very hall the boys will walk (run full blast screaming) down this coming September.

I may or may not be in one of the class pictures that line the walls of this very hallway.

I also may be rocking a suit and a horrifyingly short haircut that Susan Powter would be proud of. Could be worse. It could have been a mullet.

day 156 - yorkshires

The best dinners are the ones you don't have to cook yourself. The only downside to a hot weekday meal at my parents' house is that my children have discovered the magic that is the yorkshire and now I have to share.

day 155 - geocaching in the rain

Hmmm. I distinctly remember geocaching in the rain today, but the picture is nowhere to be found.

Instead I'll swap in another photo from yesterday. It's not very often I admit defeat, but this geocache took a couple of tries before we found it. It would have only taken one if I had listened to my instincts.

Well played, DamnBigFeet.

day155_2

My apologies - the next couple of days are pretty unexciting and I even added some nerd speak into the mix. It's going to get better, I promise.

day 154 - who's feeling brave today?

What do you do when you're too chicken to reach into a tree to find a geocache? You get a six year old to do it for you.

day154

I wouldn't classify it as bribery. I clearly remember asking who was brave enough to reach into a tree.

Or maybe there was a promise of a sleepover. Not sure.

Note to self - catch up on your blogging already.

fabulous friday challenge

Thursday, 19 July 2012

Welcome to Fabulous Friday! Thanks for joining in. I can't believe it's been a week since I last blogged. I am on vacation this week and had these big plans to catch up on my blog and it hasn't happened yet. I still have a few days left, so there's still hope.

I've still been taking pictures though. This weekend my sister-in-law taught me some tips and tricks to backlit photography. I haven't done many of them and the ones I have done have met with disaster. It seems the key is for the photographer to be in the shade of the evening light and the subject to be in the path of the setting sun but not directly in front of it. Spot metering also helps, although I had positive results using both spot and evaluative metering. Here's the result:

fabulous friday challenge

Thursday, 12 July 2012

Welcome to Fabulous Friday! Thanks for popping by. I really had a lot of fun with this week's photo shoot. I knew I wanted to take some shots with my new pink backdrop but didn't have any plans beyond that. Then I came across the most amazing photo booth props by Vol. 25. It was love at first sight and I'm really happy with the way the pictures turned out.

day 153 - stairway denied

Monday, 9 July 2012

We all have lifelong dreams that go unfulfilled. Few people (okay probably nobody) know that I wish I could play the guitar. Not entirely a shock given my love of classic rock.

Today I went for lunch with a friend (thanks Andrea!) and we went to a music store for some inspiration and appreciation of the arts. My eyes were peeled because surely there would be a sign forbidding the playing of "Stairway to Heaven". Oddly enough I didn't see one.

day 153

Here's a little known fact. I'm a Zeppelin fan but "Stairway to Heaven" is not one of my favourites. It's overrated in my opinion. Maybe I miss the appeal since I wasn't in high school in its hey day. When I was in school, the longest song to slow dance to was "November Rain" and you prayed to god you didn't get stuck dancing with a dud.

Please note that in no way am I suggesting that "November Rain" is a superior song to "Stairway to Heaven" but if it impassions you to make a case for the greatest rock song of all time, go for it in the comments!

My top three are as follows:

Led Zeppelin - Hey Hey What Can I Do
ACDC - Thunderstruck
Guns N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle

day 152 - damn you martha

Let's make an outdoor living room, I said.

Let's get a gazebo with the side walls, I said. It'll keep us from carrying the cushions in every time it rains.

Here we are a week later and the damn thing, although screwed to the deck, is held down with truck straps and looks like it's going to liftoff from the deck every time the wind blows. The sidewalls are useful alright. They're going to help carry our gazebo to Toronto the next time we have a tornado warning.

Damn you Martha Stewart.

day 150 - a night of mysteries

Soccer night in A-Town during a heatwave.

It was a night of mysteries.

day150_4day150_3

How can it be comfortable to play an entire game of soccer with your shoes on the wrong feet?

Where did the protective covers go from the poles on our trampoline?

day151_2

And why the hell are there pieces of them ALL OVER THE SOCCER FIELD?!?!?!

Wonderful.

day151

P.S. I can assure you that the only ones riding the pole were the children.

day 149 - everybody say macaroni and cheese...

There's nothing better than eating outside on a beautiful spring day. With that being said, there are so many things that are wrong with this picture. Ethan's not looking, Owen's doing "see food" in the background and the most disturbing part of this picture is the ketchup on Ethan's Kraft Dinner.
