Day 90 {bathtime with Nana}

Not much in the way of pictures for today. Work was crazy today (somebody asked me last week where I work. I work for a marketing communications agency.) and I didn't get a chance to take many pictures.

I took this picture as I left the house this morning. (Somebody else asked about the temperature here. We measure the temperature here in Celsius.)

Then I didn't take anymore pictures until I got home tonight.

As I sat down to watch my soap opera, I realized that my brilliant idea from yesterday was one of my dumbest yet. (On a totally different note: Boo Lucas Roberts.)

They found the flaw in my plan. (Sigh...EJ. Hubba hubba.) Luckily Uncle Jarret called with a new plan today. A brilliant one. It's not gonna look pretty, but it's fool proof. Stay tuned.

Ethan sees me get off the couch so he makes a beeline for the remote. (Boo, hiss Nicole Walker.)

Jason is working afternoon shift this week and on the days that I work the evenings are crazy. Luckily my mom popped in and gave me a hand.

A shot of Ava tonight during her bath.

That's it for tonight. I have to jet as I am trying to update our old computer in time for this whole Conficker worm fiasco that may or may not happen. Just one more reason I should have bought a mac instead of a PC.

Day 89 {child proofing continues}

Monday, 30 March 2009

Well today was very uneventful. It was a busy day at work. My first picture of the day is me squealing out of the parking lot leaving work in the dust. I lost track of the time and left the office late.

The trip home included a classic:

And a new song with one of the dumbest music videos I have ever seen (and remember that I was around for the entire 1980s):

When I got home all signs pointed to a pretty standard day. Furniture all flipped around to block stuff...

and the curtains hung so the kids couldn't rip them down.

Today's highlights? Ava tormented her brothers, Ethan got a fat lip and Owen pinched his fingers in the cabinet doors. The new child proofing system? Not working so well.

So I got an idea.

Here's the new and improved system after an hour and a half of assembling our secondary stair gate. I'm not big on directions (as you well know if you have heard the story about me and my mom's smoking skating rink under the Christmas tree) so it probably took longer than most people.

P.S. I was watching my soap opera and watching Tony DiMera die. Again.

P.P.S. Boo Rafe Hernandez.

Anyway, I got sidetracked there. Not only did it provide a temporary solution but also a distraction

for Mia (Owen):

and for Puffy (Ethan). Yep. Whole new set of nicknames from Ava today.

That was it for today. Keep your fingers crossed that the cardboard works because A. my kids are resourceful and they eventually outsmart us everytime and B. they can smell fear.

Day 88 {puddle jumping}

Sunday, 29 March 2009

Today was a pretty uneventful day. It was miserable outside so we decided to have a movie afternoon while the boys were asleep.

Ava finally agreed to watch Sleeping Beauty. She got it at Christmas but refused to watch it because of the dragon on the cover.

I told her we'd make a bed on the floor...

and that there would be snacks (Ava's favourite - popcorn twists).

We also practiced what she would do when the dragon showed up.

The movie was a hit and we ended up watching it twice. The boys woke up a bit later. This is Ethan with me.

Uncle Jarret came over to help us mount the tv on the wall. Why are we mounting it? Let's recap, shall we? Jarret built us a beautiful tv cabinet and because of the style we picked we can't use child locks on the doors. The boys like to slam each other's fingers in the doors so we pushed a coffee table against it. But now, one of the boys will create a diversion like this:

So the other one can do this:

This is Ethan in both pictures but you get the idea.

Anyway, this is the new solution we are giving a trial run. The drawer pulls are tied together with the lace from a skate and the red thing is a tie strap from a pickup truck. Does this make us rednecks?

We had another discovery today. Ethan has a hell of a throwing arm and pretty good aim.

The sun finally came out at dinner time so we decided to go for a walk. The sky of course clouded over the second we left. The park was a mess so that was shortlived. Instead I saw a huge puddle and told Ava to get out and jump in it.

While she was jumping Jason was telling her that she is going to get pneumonia and I was telling her to jump higher.

So we headed for home

and as we were walking, I noticed there was a full moon out. It was Ava's.

Anyway, I wanted to post a little note on my puddle jumping picture from today. It was a happy accident that I made that I thought would be helpful to somebody. I had changed my metering mode to spot metering earlier in the day for pictures in the house and I forgot to change it back. So when I took the picture of Ava, even though it looked good on my camera screen, it turned out like this:

Cool sky but the whole picture is really underexposed. But because I always shoot in RAW, I was able to salvage it in Photoshop. I was able to lighten it to this:

But because I am picky I still wanted the cool sky from the overexposed picture. (This is where the happy accident came in. If I had shot my camera in the evaluative metering mode I use most of the time, the sky probably would have been blown out. But because I spot metered on a dark subject, the sky ended up dark too.) So I put the lightened image on top of the dark image on a new layer. Then I erased the sky from the top layer to reveal the dark sky underneath. Then I did a bit more editing and voila:

So my tip for the day is always, always, always shoot in RAW if your camera supports it. Edit the exposure of your picture in RAW and then save it as a JPG when you are done. RAW files are double the size but you can lighten them a lot without ruining the picture. If I had shot this in large JPG this amount of lightening would have caused the picture to fall apart and I most likely would have trashed it. Anyway, I hope this helps somebody.

I'm off to watch Twilight with Jason. On a scale of cinematic brilliance I give it a D-. I'd give it an F but it's based on the books and they were amazing. I've told Jason to set his expectations very, very low.

Week 13 layout

Saturday, 28 March 2009

Here is my layout for week thirteen that I created today. I'm not sure what I think about it. I think I really like it - it's just really busy. I just find that a lot of my weekly layouts are looking the same so I wanted to do something really different. I used to love to scribble little pictures on my binders in school so the second I saw this paper I loved it. It comes plain just black and white and I colored it in.

Day 87 {playing outside}

Today was pretty quiet. Jason was in a curling bonspiel and Ava went to my mom and dad's for the afternoon so it was just the boys and I. I had baracaded all around the tv, pushed the chair against the gate to keep the boys from pulling it down and had put the dinette chairs in the kitchen so the boys couldn't climb onto the kitchen table. I figured I had everything covered so I went to wash some dishes while they played in the dining room. I heard a noise and couldn't figure out what it was as there isn't anything in there they can get into.

Or is there?

I don't think they threw anything down the heating duct, but won't worry too much until smoke starts billowing from it.

It was a beautiful day so the boys and I went for a walk in the afternoon to see what Ava was up to with Nana and Grandad.

Ava pushing the boys around.

The boys "talking" to Nana (Owen's on the left and Ethan is on the right).

Ava's Dora boots:

This shot didn't turn out as I was shooting randomly while pulling the wagon but Ava was listening to my iPod as we were on our way home. I just like this picture.

I recently came across a site called Plinky. It is a site that helps to inspire you and they ask you questions to get your creativity going. It's pretty interesting but it has me stumped. One of this weeks prompts is "list five things to do before you die". I don't think this is anything I have ever given any thought to before. My list is more of an "I'd like to do this again someday" list. It contains stuff like 1. sleep in until noon and 2. be able to go into the bathroom A. by myself and B. without somebody banging on the door and yelling "MOMMY!!!" at me. I'll have to give this list some thought because right now I am drawing a blank. What's on your list?
