Day 304 {trick or treating}

Saturday, 31 October 2009

Here are the kids ready for trick or treating. Unfortunately by the time I got started taking pictures there was very little light left. Story of my life lately and it's only going to get worse now that the clocks have fallen back.

Here they are in their costumes. Ava was a bunny rabbit, Ethan was a giraffe and Owen was a skunk (thanks again Tricia and Checco!).

All three kids loved their costumes so other than a few initial balance problems

they made out great. We did the car run first to Grandma & Grandpa's house

and then back to town to do the neighbourhood. Next stop - taking in a good haul at Nana & Grandad's house:

Our street. It was busy at times but I'll bet we didn't even have 50 kids. It was damp and really cold and some people are really riled up about H1N1 and didn't let their kids go out so maybe that factored into it.

The best part about trick or treating: the candy sorting. Not a bad haul for three cute kids, huh:

Day 303 {pumpkin carving}

Friday, 30 October 2009

Today was a good day. We had a pumpkin carving contest at work. The winner? The pumpkin the second from the left. For all of you saying but the second one from the right should have won. It's brilliant with the bat flying out of the pumpkin and the lid propped behind to look like the moon. Yes that was the one Checco and I made and yes, we were robbed. ;)

I took in some cookies. Lesson of the day: iced cookies take forever to set. When in doubt leave it longer because apparently 8 hours still isn't long enough because they got smushed. :(

After dinner my mom and dad came over for our yearly pumpkin carving night. I was not impressed to discover the $14 worth of pumpkins we bought at Stroms had already started to decompose on our steps and had mushy tops. Luckily they were still good enough to carve and the seeds were still good.

Nana entertained the boys with pumpkin slime. :)

The masterpieces. Ava's creation is on the left. The one on the right is mine.

Day 302 {halloween cookies}

Thursday, 29 October 2009

I made more halloween sugar cookies today and had more success keeping the frosting from running off this time.

My attempt at black frosting. I have determined it can't be done with regular good colouring. You need the actual Wilton stuff. Oh well. I worked with what I had.

That was it. Thanks for looking!

Day 301 {ava the good witch}

Wednesday, 28 October 2009

Today was Ava's last day of storyhour and halloween party at the library. Big thanks to Checco and Tricia for the witch costume. :)

I decided to make frosted sugar cookies. It was easier than I thought but getting the right consistency to the icing was a bit of a trick. The sticks were also a waste of time as they slid out of most of the cookies the second I picked them up.

Here's my first crack at a spiderweb:

Day 300 {good will}

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Today's picture is not exciting but it's the only picture I took all day. Here are the clothes I weeded from our closet to go to good will. Number of shirts containing shoulder pads? One. Had I known that I would have gotten rid of it long ago.

Day 299 {organized...not so much}

Monday, 26 October 2009

After a weekend of organizing and cleaning I was back to work. I organized so well that I put my purse in a new spot and walked right out the door without it. I realized I was missing it halfway to work and had to turn around and go back to get it making me late for work. Score one point in favour of disorganization.

One thing I didn't forget? That the cell phone ban came into effect. I didn't forget my wireless blue tooth which is a good thing because I did see one cop during my travels. Score one point for organization. One thing they weren't pulling people over for? Slightly exceeding the speed limit. Pick it up people!

Day 298 {bunk beds}

Sunday, 25 October 2009

We had a busy day today. The organizing continued. Mario and Luigi tag teamed and used the new/old storage bin I used to organize their toys to try to unlock the water and ice on the fridge:

and Ava got a new "comfy" bed and Tinkerbell bedding and curtains for her room:

I think she likes it. As I suspected, her bears and dolls are sleeping on the nice new sheets on the bottom bunk and I had to make the top bed for her where she finally fell asleep once she finally stopped bouncing around.

After that it was off to my parents' house for my Dad's birthday (happy birthday Dad!) and our belated Thanksgiving. My mom's one request? A new family picture:

After that the kids played in the leaves in my dad's trailer. My dad had them loaded up to take them away.

Ava spent yesterday afternoon, last night and all day today at my parents' house. Tonight she showed me her new game: "Ava's Store". My mom saved boxes and other containers for her and made up a laundry basket with all of her "stock" and her cash register.

She even has her own currency:

After a long story of how the dixie cups were sold out but she saved some for me, my groceries are ready to go:

I highly recommend it. Ava had a blast and took the whole thing quite seriously.

One more picture for the day. When we left to go home, we discovered some jerk shot at our van with a paintball gun while we were parked in front of my parents' house. Thank god it washed off because it left a couple of pretty big splatters on the van. Little buggars.

Day 297 {clean sweep}

Saturday, 24 October 2009

Today fall cleaning started in our house. I have decided that over the next 30 days this house is getting an overhaul. The result of one day of organizing? Five bags of clothes for goodwill out of the closets and dressers and a fraction of the toys in the living room. The upstairs hall is full but the stuff is all organized for leaving the house.

I had a little helper working with me. Ava spent part of the morning trying on clothes to see if they still fit and running around with four shirts on at a time. The rest of the morning and half of the afternoon she ran around wearing purple underwear and these socks she found in her dresser:

My other picture of the day. Ava has been practicing writing her letters and tries to follow along when I read her stories. She has asked me to teach her to read. She has been making signs and taping them in different spots in the house. Here is a sign she made for her brothers telling them "don't climb up on the table". I'm sure I don't have to tell you that it didn't work.

There's also a sign on the kitchen cupboards that says "don't climb on the kitchen counter". That one was disregarded too, surprise, surprise. Thanks for looking!

Day 296 {you want fries with that?}

Friday, 23 October 2009

Back to work today and off to Future Shop to buy a blue tooth (what a dumb name) for my cell phone in advance of Monday's cell phone law coming into effect.

$47.99 later I feel like a moron. I look like all those other losers I used to make fun of. I feel like I should answer my phone saying "you want fries with that?" I'm going to look like a real winner driving around in the car with just me in it talking to myself. Oh well, beats a $500 fine.
