day 120 - new flat iron $

Friday, 30 April 2010

On Tuesday morning my flat iron died unexpectedly. I only had one side of my hair straightened at the time. Go figure.

Anyway, I've straightened my hair for so long that I can't remember how to style my hair without it, so I needed a new one stat. Big thanks to Aimee at work who suggested this new ceramic flat iron and the website she pointed me to cost me half of what it would have cost me at my salon.

Today in the middle of the afternoon, the UPS guy - who ironically is as bald as a cue ball - dropped it off. Here it is on my desk along with a postcard that came with it. I thought it fitting to have it in the picture since Aimee is responsible for my future good hair days. :)

day 119 - happy birthday grandma $

Thursday, 29 April 2010

Happy birthday Grandma! We love you and hope you had a great birthday. :)

Not much going on around our house today. Here's a picture of a flower I brought home from work for Ava. We get fresh flowers every week at work so every once in a while I will bring one home for her. This one was beautiful and I haven't been able to stop looking at it since I brought it home.

Other than that, it was a slower day thankfully. I'll leave you with a little Ava-ism from earlier in the week:

Ava: Daddy?
Daddy: Yes Ava?
Ava: The boys are feeding the dog chocolate. If she dies, can I get a hamster?

day 118 - what next $

Last week the boys kept playing with the spring on the wall behind the door of their room, so we removed it. Shortly afterward they got the inside safety knob off of the door. We have since replaced the springy thing and the boys keep pointing to the knob and saying "bang bang" repeatedly. They haven't been able to get it off since, so it appears they got it off by banging the knob against the wall.

So what do you do at naptime when you have jumped over one gate, slipped through two gates like a dog door, have a door with a safety knob you can no longer get off and have no furniture in your room other than the bed you sleep in? You take the heat register out of the floor and throw toys down the vents.

I think I got all of the toys out but I suspect unless I smell something burning I won't know for sure.

The other thing they did? Removed the safety plugs from the wall and hid the nightlight somewhere I can't find it. It's funny because the plug cover had the same reaction I did when I saw what they had done.

A few weeks ago I was out running errands and had somebody give me the whole wink and nod and the "time for another one" comment. Obviously not a blog reader.

day 117 - happiness $

Tuesday, 27 April 2010

"Surround yourself with the things and the people that make you happy - this is success."
- Sasha Azevedo

Well God bless Lorraine and her giant ass because I laughed every time I looked at this on my bookshelf at work today.

Not much happened today other than that. Even though I made a beautiful shepherd's pie for dinner (which everyone else ate), I had cinnamon toast on the brain so this was my dinner. Method used? Approach #3. Nobody tells me how to eat my cinnamon toast. ;)

Seriously though - approach #3 needs some defending. From the looks of the pictures, her toast sat around for five minutes and then she buttered it. If you don't toast the crap out of the bread and you hit it with the margarine while it's still hot it is absolute perfection.

day 116 - spring flowers $

Monday, 26 April 2010

Today I was shocked and embarrassed to discover that for thirty-three years (oh my god am I that old?) I have been making cinnamon toast the wrong way. Apparently approach #3, which I have always found to be delicious and fast (and the way my mother taught me to make it.....) is wrong, wrong, wrong. Apparently the cinnamon toast police have spoken. ;)

This isn't half as upsetting as finding out 28 years in that pecan pie is actually one big ass butter tart. That one hurt and I still feel ripped off about all of that lost time.

On the bright side, when I got home from work I was excited to see that there is now some colour in our garden. The bulbs Ava planted with Grandma (thank you!) have started to bloom.

day 115 - birthday party $

Sunday, 25 April 2010

Today we went out for dinner for my mom's birthday (happy birthday week Mom!). I have bought very few sappy cards in my life and today was no exception. Here is the card I chose for my mom. It doesn't hold a candle to my first choice (there was a lady on it that looked just like the Queen Mother. She was holding a rope tied to a donkey and it said "Lorraine was a wonderful lady but she had a big ass." It was brilliant. Anyway, I had it in my hands and was walking to the cash when I remembered that A. this is not my mom's humour and B. I bought it for my dad's birthday last year.), but it was still not too shabby.

The inside says "Please, I beg of you, don't do this with it."

Anyway, we don't go out for dinner very often, so it was nice to get out of the house. Here's Owen colouring at the table at Swiss Chalet

and the boys drinking milk from straws. A rare occurrence as anytime I have ever given them a cup to drink from their meal ends up floating in it. Thankfully that didn't happen this time.

My sister took this picture and I love it. This is typical Ava.

Happy birthday Mom!

Not much happening today other than that. Lots of chasing around as usual and the boys found a new toy to play with:

Ava: "Mommy, the boys are playing with the calculator on the wall."

It didn't take long to realize she was referring to the digital thermostat on the wall. They had dragged a chair over to it and were pressing buttons. Fabulous.

day 114 - escape artist $

Saturday, 24 April 2010

So the whole double gate brainwave from earlier in the week? Not. Working.

Owen has yet to leave his room but Ethan (below) apparently likes a challenge.

In other news, the 1 pm showing of What a Girl Wants was standing room only.

day 113 - a trip to the park $

Friday, 23 April 2010

I took a couple of pictures today before I got home. I could show you the picture I took of the Burger King menu board when I zipped through the drive thru at lunch. Or the picture I took of my iPod on my desk, providing a little bit of extra light in my dark little office. I don't have any windows and it's been a dark couple of days since the bulb in my 90s floor lamp aka "the sun" threw its last rays of light. Now it's glaring fluorescent lights or dim desk lamp mood lighting. Today I went with the mood lighting but must find a second light sometime soon before I destroy my eyes.

Anyway, I will spare you the filler and get to after dinner. We went to the park.

Ava decided she wanted to ride her scooter. Until she slipped off of it. Somehow it was my fault from ten feet away. She had tantrums the entire way down the street. Note to self: if you ever become one of those "what I wouldn't give to go back to when my kids were young" people, remember this moment. Four so far? Not so fabulous.

The kids had fun at the park. The boys were in their element and Ethan was right into the pictures. He is the master of "Cheeeeeeeeeeeese".

Trying something a little different on this one below. Not sure if I like it or not. I think I have to sit on it for a bit.

Anyway, we got everybody all set to go and organized and the one thing we forgot ended up burning us. Six little words: "Mommy, I have to go pee". Crap.

Thank god my parents only live a couple of blocks from the playground.

day 112 - the great escape $

Thursday, 22 April 2010

Happy Earth Day! Remember the tree we planted this time last year? Dead as a doornail. I think it was dead before we even got it. So here we go again - another new tree for the backyard in time for Earth Day (thanks Karen & Doug!):

The past three days Ethan has jumped the baby gate at 6:30 am and busied himself doing all kinds of stuff he's not supposed to be doing. So...last night marked the beginning of the two gate barricade. We stacked two gates one on top of the other and that seemed to do the trick because he didn't get out this morning. It didn't work so well at naptime.

First of all, the boys figured out how to get the child safety knobs OFF. Not how to squeeze them and turn the knob -- they figured out how to remove them. I found it in their room on the floor behind the door.

Anyway, the double gate worked for about five minutes during nap time. It wasn't long before they made their escape. There are rubber pads on the four corners of the gates. They pushed out the bottom corners of the top gate, Owen gave Ethan a boost over the bottom gate and he slid between the gates like a dog door.

And once again, the kids manage to stay one step ahead of us.

day 111 - playing in the backyard $

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

It was a pretty uneventful day around here. Jason's been on holidays and I was off today so it was a day of laundry and odd jobs around the house.

The weather was beautiful, so the kids were happy to play outside. All Ava wanted to do was play with my camera which excites me but also scares me because she gets right into it and runs all over the place. If she breaks it, there goes Project 365. ;)

Anyway, here is one of her pictures - it's the monkey bars on the play set. I think it's very cool:

I decided I wanted to try panning pictures again. The problem is they are not easy in the sense that they can take many tries and how many tries you do depends on how strong your stomach is. Two or three tries and that was it. Overall it was somewhat of a failure compared to last time, but Owen enjoyed himself.

Other randoms from the day include: buds on our crab apple tree in the backyard

and Ava's choice of footwear for the day. Yes - we went in public like this and yes I went along with it. You have to pick your battles and this was not the hill I was going to die on today. I actually find it kind of cute.

I also took pictures of the boys side by side. They aren't great pictures or favourites or anything, but I know that twins fascinate people and I regularly get requests for pictures of the boys side by side so people can check out the resemblance. That's Owen on the left and Ethan on the right.

Here's a fun one of Ava and I. I told her I was taking a picture of our shadows. Here she is making a funny face for the camera.

Talk about depressing and a completely unflattering shadow. The hoodie and slightly baggy jeans I had on make me look like I'm 300 pounds. Luckily I noticed this after my exercise class tonight. It makes me want to go downstairs and kill that bag of Cheetos on the top shelf of the cupboard. Thankfully, not only is the thought of climbing the stairs exhausting, but my arms are so sore from class that I couldn't lift my arms to shovel them into my mouth anyway.
