Day 334 {new moon}

Monday, 30 November 2009

Not much happening today as I am back to work again for the full five days. Here's my ticket stub from last night. I had a gift certificate so I didn't have to pay admission, but unless things have changed, the movies run $9.95 a show. Totally worth it in this case and thus I will stop petitioning for a refund for the $9.95 I spent on Twilight that was about $9.50 more than it was worth. ;)

Seeing the movie makes me think I need to read the books again. With all of the stuff going on in this house on a daily basis I think there's a fat chance of that happening. Thanks for looking!

Day 333 {cookies, cookies, cookies}

Sunday, 29 November 2009

Another busy day with lots of stuff happening. Today was the cookie exchange. Ava's grandad came to pick her up early. She was thrilled when Grandad arrived but had one stipulation - she had to wear her clown wig to his house.

No idea why, but she was very serious about it and it was absolutely hilarious.

The next order of business was getting my stuff ready for the cookie exchange:

and of course keeping the boys away from the Christmas tree. As I was packaging things up I heard quite a few ornaments hit the floor. Each time I heard one bounce across the floor it was followed by crazy high pitch laughter. Sigh.

Check out this haul at the cookie exchange. For the most part I only ate half of each cookie. Outstanding! And I took seven dozen home. Uh oh.

I ended the night at Galaxy (apparently the L is silent lol) to see New Moon with Jenn. The verdict? Fantastic. A great movie and light years better than Twilight.

Thanks for looking!

Day 332 {parade}

Saturday, 28 November 2009

Today was a very busy day. First order of business: calling Nana. My sons have decided they like to talk on the phone. They have no idea what end to listen with and what end to talk with and they can't say much, but they love it. Each kid got a chance to talk and as the phone was taken away from each of them and passed to the next person they had a meltdown and cried and screamed at the top of their lungs. During the meltdown the phone rang and a Jehovah's Witness came to the door. Way to kick off the morning with a bang.

At that point I started baking 8 dozen cookies for tomorrow's cookie exchange. My choice: the Cashew Caramel Cookies I made earlier this month. I'd have to say they are one of the nicest cookies I've ever made.

Anyway, I started making them first thing in the morning and piped the caramel on just before I went to bed.

Next order of business - decorating the house. That was a much smaller job than usual because the boys will break and destroy everything I put up. So the name of the game this year is keep it simple and most importantly

Ava and I put up the tree. I almost ended up with a black eye. I was working one layer above Ava when her branch got stuck. She yanked on it, it went flying up and nailed me right between the eyes.

Jason worked out the whole outdoor Christmas light scenario. Remember our garage sale? Guess who accidentally sold their Christmas lights? Oops.

The finished decorating:

Not bad, but very, very plain. One 6.5' tree with 48 evenly spaced shatterproof ornaments. That's it. Boring. All of the nice stuff is in the basement and very well might stay there until the kids move out. Case in point my Santa Claus. My grandmother gave this to me. I remember her having this Santa Claus when I was a child and it was around at least ten years before I was born. I put it out thinking the kids would enjoy it. They enjoyed it alright. Four days later as I type this Santa is on the stairs safely behind the baby gate after one of the boys reached inside and unscrewed the lightbulb. I can't bear the thought of it getting destroyed so Santa gets kisses at bathtime and bedtime as the kids go past him but other than that, he is strictly off limits.

And finally, tonight we took the kids to the Santa Claus parade (that's Ethan on the left and Owen on the right. As you can see I still give up on the whole bottle thing).

Luckily the kids didn't notice that Santa's voice sounded awfully familiar....... ;)

That was it. A busy day but a good one. Thanks for looking!

Day 330 {slumber party}

Thursday, 26 November 2009

This photo was taken at 12:02 am and it is the earliest I have managed to get my photo of the day out of the way. Ava woke up just before midnight and asked if she could sleep with me (Jason is on midnights). She would end up waking me up several times over the next few hours for various reasons. Her ear was sore, her ponytail was falling out, her bed was more comfortable, tuck her in again, my bed was more comfortable, etc. Finally I gave up and turned on Treehouse TV for her so I could get some sleep. When I woke up for work a little while later, the tv was on and she was fast asleep. I left for work exhausted and she still looked like this when I left the house.

I got a good laugh on my way to work. I heard the rumble of an engine. I looked over to see a Dodge Ram with a hilarious bumper sticker that read "It is better to have loved and lost than to live with a psycho the rest of your life." Anyway, I tried to get a picture and failed miserably. I really need to start carpooling.

Anyway, it was refreshing to get a laugh since this is the usual sight I see:

LAME. Who finds this funny? Obviously the person who put this corny joke up. At least their "Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things" joke from the summer got an "ewwwwww" out of me. This sign just gets a daily eye roll from me. Thanks for looking!

Day 329 {bathtime}

Wednesday, 25 November 2009

Today was a terrible day. I took the morning off as vacation as the babysitter had an appointment and even though I was only at work for half a day, it was one of the worst days I have had at work in years. As I relaxed in the bath, I remembered last night's big event.

It was just the kids and I and I was in the bathtub when I could have sworn I heard somebody walking across the floor downstairs. I jumped out of the bath and went running down the hall in my towel turning on all of the lights in the house. I made the dog go down the stairs ahead of me and I searched the whole house only to discover it was Owen. He likes to kick the wall through the rails on his crib. He also likes to give me heart attacks apparently.

Earlier in the day, Ava had a very successful 45 minutes on the ice with Aunt Sara. I was home with the boys and it killed me that I wasn't there taking pictures. I was very lucky though because Bonny was at the arena and took some pictures for me. Thanks Bonny and thanks Sara. :)

Anyway, just before I had my bath, Ava and I had a pre-bedtime dance party to our new favourite song:

Damn you Jerry O'Connell. Thanks for looking!

Day 328 {skating}

Tuesday, 24 November 2009

One by one the kids got sick yesterday and by the end of the day I wasn't feeling so hot myself. Today we all still weren't feeling well so I stayed home from work and we had a pajama day.

On taps for tomorrow? Ava's first skating lesson with Sara. The skates came out and she tried them on for the first time since last year. She tried them on in the house last year but refused to wear them on the ice. Here's hoping she's more into it this year. She's pretty excited about it, so I have a good feeling about it. Or maybe it's because it's several days later as I write this and I already know the outcome. :)

Day 327 {3,000 kms}

Monday, 23 November 2009

Unbelievable. Just under two months on the road and our new car has 3,000 kms on it already. And that's with me only working three days a week. They are going to be going on even faster now that I am back to full time.

Yep. Back to the boring inanimate objects again...sorry. Thanks for looking!

Day 326 {pantry bandits}

Sunday, 22 November 2009

My sons and their favourite past time - raiding my nicely organized lazy susan and taking off with the Kraft Dinner. I can't begin to tell you how many fingers have been pinched in this damn thing over the years. I curse this thing every day and would not recommend putting one of these in to anybody.

While I was folding laundry, I suddenly noticed it was very quiet in the living room. In this house that's never a good thing. I turned around to discover the kids watching Handy Manny. Who is this mysterious latin man who can capture the attention of all three of my kids at one time? This may be the only reason we keep the Disney Playhouse channel after the free trial is up because the ten minutes that he occupied all three of them was AMAZING.

Here's my only other picture of the day. As you can see, Ethan still has the best Chandler Bing smile I have ever seen.

That was it. An uneventful day. Thanks for looking!

Day 325 {the holiday season begins}

Saturday, 21 November 2009

Nothing too exciting happened today. We kicked off the holiday season with our first Christmas movie of the year: It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas.

Ava loved it. We're in a Muppet phase right now with Ava going crazy for Miss Piggy all because of this commercial:

You can only rewind and rewatch that commercial so many times so we went to the library today and borrowed this movie. Thanks for looking!

Day 324 {christmas shopping}

Friday, 20 November 2009

It was back to work this morning after an interesting night. Ethan is now sick and Owen threw up overnight resulting in new sheets and pajamas for both of us. As a result, I was slightly irritable again on the way to work. It didn't help that the trip to work felt like one long funeral procession.

Anyway, I found the guy in front of me highly entertaining on my way in. Seriously pal? Stanley Cup Champions?! The last time they won the Stanley cup I wasn't even a glimmer in my father's eye and they sure as hell didn't win it the year your 2000 Caravan rolled off the assembly line. Given this year's record you should tint your windows a little darker and slump down in your Leafmobile.

After work I headed to Zellers where apparently the lowest price is no longer the law now that Walmart has taken over. But they did have some good toy sales on, so now our shopping for Ava is complete.

After that it was off to King's Buffet for dinner. Happy 80th birthday Grandpa McDougall! Thanks for looking!

Day 323 {HolyCrapTheseReallyAreAmazing Cookies}

Thursday, 19 November 2009

Not being one to give up, I rocked these cookies today in my second attempt. Not only did I switch to a lighter and thinner white corn syrup, but I pulled the pot from the stove just as the bubbles started to form, resulting in a creamier sauce. The verdict? Holy crap indeed. They would be a definite candidate for the cookie exchange I am in next week, however my mother has informed me that the name is not classy enough for her cookie exchange. ;)

Anyway, that was it for today and thus ends my three day work week until the new year as I return to work full time next week for the next two months. Thanks for looking!

Day 322 {snow tires}

Wednesday, 18 November 2009

Not much going on today. I was home with the kids and they kept me busy all day while I did laundry left and right. Here is one of the only pictures I took today: our snow tires that were put on yesterday. Are these sexy or what? Did you know that you can squeal snow tires? Don't ask how I know this, but apparently it is possible.

In unrelated news, does anybody watch General Hospital? It has been fantastic lately. It even got me to like an Adam Lambert song:

Damn you General Hospital. You took me from being totally indifferent to him to having this song in my head non-stop. Thanks for looking!

Day 321 {another baking disaster}

Tuesday, 17 November 2009

Another day, another baking disaster. Yesterday I came across a fantastic recipe for something called "HolyCrapTheseAreAmazing Cookies". They looked delicious and I had to make them right away, abandoning my whole no more baking for fear of gained pounds plan. They were no bake so how much easier could they get?

Yeah not the case. Apparently my full boil was a little too full so the corn syrup, sugar and peanut butter fused to the cornflakes like super glue. The result? 38 one and a half inch bullets you could fire out of a cannon and easily kill someone with.

Here's the recipe. As I would determine the next day:

this recipe + bubbles just starting to form = HolyCrapTheseAreAmazing Cookies

this recipe + crazy ass bubbles boiling and bubbling all over the place = homemade contact cement

Needless to say the entire batch went in the garbage.

Today was also an educational experience for me. Thanks to this picture on the People of WalMart site, I learned about a very real and very serious disease: Dunlap Disease. Thank you Bunker Bob for your informative comment and for adding this phrase to my vocabulary. ;)

Thanks for looking!

Day 320 {ava is sick}

Monday, 16 November 2009

This is a record in our house. Owen has been sick for almost a week and it only started spreading today. Ava woke up last night with a fever of 100.1 F and ended up in bed with me watching Treehouse TV at 4 in the morning (Jason is back on midnights). I was a little bit cranky this morning from lack of sleep. Everytime I almost fell asleep Ava would scream out "map!" at the top of her lungs. Damn that Dora the Explorer.

Anyway, 65 days of inanimate objects rolls on. Here is Ava's tempra bottle. She's the only kid I know who is excited to get medicine.

That was it for today as it was a work day and dark by the time I got home. Thanks for looking!

Day 319 {santa claus parade}

Sunday, 15 November 2009

Not much happened today. There definitely wasn't any baking. I'm up a pound and not happy about it. I need to get my butt back in gear and start walking again.

Not many pictures today. Ethan stole Ava's princess shoes. Nothing new in this house. Shoes left at the front door are quickly stolen by the boys and paraded through the house no matter what style they are.

Here are some pictures of Ethan and Ava watching the Toronto Santa Claus parade with Nana. Once again my apologies for the terrible lighting - this whole getting dark early thing is killing me.

Owen's missing because he would much rather do morse code with the outside light.

Other than a lot of playing with the Wii, that was about it for today. Thanks for looking!

Day 318 {early christmas present}

Saturday, 14 November 2009

Last night when I got home from work, my parents came over to visit us. They surprised us and gave us our early Christmas present:

There was a lot of dancing around, there was a lot of screaming and if I remember correctly, it was all done by me. It was setup right away and by the time the kids were finished their baths we were ready to start playing. Ava is a natural at bowling. She got a higher score than Jason did on the first try and she bowled a 110 this afternoon. Not bad at all.

Here she is playing on Friday night. Excuse the terrible lighting.

Thanks Mom & Dad! Definitely the coolest Christmas present ever. Thanks for looking!

Day 317 {cold season has begun}

Friday, 13 November 2009

Today was a great day. Well the end of it was anyway. It was a work day and it was busy so that wasn't the good part. Owen's sick and I had to stop and get tempra on the way home (my picture of the day), so that definitely wasn't the good part either.

See tomorrow's post for what was so great about today. Thanks for looking!

Day 316 {flash cards}

Thursday, 12 November 2009

Ava has been asking a lot of questions lately and spends a lot of time practicing writing letters on any piece of paper she can find. My mom picked her up some flashcards so she can start learning words and almost every day she picks cards out and asks me what they say. Today I went through a few of them with her until she lost interest. It was frustrating for her because she isn't familar with lower case letters.

And here she was a little big later still on a big time sugar high from the Caramel Rice Krispie treats I made. And yes I realized - there is a HUGE difference between condensed milk and evaporated milk. As a result, this time I didn't flop the recipe and they are really, really good.

And here she was at bedtime, thrilled that Scarlett jumped up on her bed in time to hear "Green Eggs and Ham".

That was it for today. No pictures of the boys. Owen has come down with a cold and Ethan's mission in life today was to irritate him while he wasn't feeling well. Thanks for looking!
